She Was 85, Handcuffed to a Chair, and Refused to Give Up

At about two in the morning, an armed man broke into the rural Idaho home of 85-year-old Christine Jenneiahn. He pointed a gun at her, struck her, and handcuffed her to a chair.

Incident: March 13, 2024 | Bingham County, Idaho

The intruder demanded valuables and threatened to kill her. Christine's disabled adult son was also inside the house.

While the man searched the home, Christine dragged the chair toward her bedroom. Still handcuffed, she reached a revolver she kept under her pillow, returned to the living room, and concealed it until she had an opportunity to act.

She fired. The intruder fired back and struck her multiple times. Christine survived. The Bingham County prosecutor later ruled the intruder's death a justifiable homicide and described her response as an extraordinary act of self-preservation.

What Christine Did Right, and Why It Worked

First, she refused to surrender mentally. Her body was restrained, but she kept looking for the next useful action.

Second, she moved while the intruder was distracted. Timing is one of the most important principles in martial arts and in real self-defense.

Third, she used a tool she knew how to operate. Equipment without familiarity can become another problem. Training turns a tool into an option.

Her Plan Was Not Complicated

Christine did not execute a cinematic sequence. She moved toward an available tool, waited for an opening, and acted with commitment.

That is the lesson. Simple does not mean easy. Simple means the plan still makes sense when you are hurt, scared, and under pressure.

The Part That Stuck With Me

At 85 years old, handcuffed and injured, Christine still believed she could do something. That belief may have saved her life and her son's life.

Courage is not reserved for young athletes. It belongs to anyone willing to prepare, think, and act.
