1. Choose the Right Spot – Take the time to properly assess the area you plan to use for your stand up garden bed. Ensure there is sufficient sunlight for your plants and that the soil is suitable for what you intend to grow. It’s important to ensure the area is free from debris and cleared of weeds before you start.
2. Gather the Materials – You will need landscape fabric, soil, plants, a frame, and hirting clips. Ensure that when choosing a frame the materials are strong enough to support its weight once fully laden with soil and plants or vegetables.
3. Assemble the Frame – Follow the instructions provided with your frame or look up tutorials in order to assemble it correctly. Make sure you secure the pieces together with screws and that the frame is properly level. If you are placing your boxes on slanted ground, be sure to make your boxes level by using a level, not level with the ground below it. This method will result in your legs being different sizes. Remember, "Measure twice, cut once."
4. Add the Soil – Line the frame with the landscape fabric, fill it with soil, and then start arranging your plants and vegetables on top. You want at least 6 - 8 inches of gardening soil.
5. Secure it – Once you are done adding the soil and arranging the plants and vegetables, securely fasten the frame to the ground using hirting clips. This extra step can help ensure the frame does not move or shift with different weather conditions and soil composition. You could also add footings below the legs that will not rot. Cedar is a good material choice for this. I personally used cedar fence pikots cut into squares. They act like a coaster.
