How One Woman's Judo Training Turned the Tables on an Armed Robber (and Why It Matters)

A judo practitioner executing a foot sweep on an attacker outside a European pharmacy

It was a Tuesday afternoon in early 2025. A 38-year-old Polish woman stepped out of a pharmacy in Bastia Umbra, just outside Perugia, Italy. She had picked up what she came for. The weather was mild. Nothing about the day suggested what came next.

Incident: Early 2025, afternoon | Bastia Umbra, near Perugia, Italy

Then a man stepped toward her and pulled a screwdriver. He told her the usual thing in these situations: come with me, do what I say, don't make a scene.

She did not argue. She did not run. She did not freeze.

She waited for him to get close enough to commit to his grip on her arm. Then she did something he clearly did not expect. She broke his balance, swept his leg out from under him, and sent him to the ground. Once he was down, she pinned him and held him there. He screamed. He threatened. He tried to fight his way out. None of it worked.

She held the pin until police arrived. He was arrested on the spot. She walked away completely unharmed.

What She Did Right, and Why It Worked

Let's break down what actually happened in that moment, because it is a textbook example of how judo training saves lives in real-world situations.

First, she waited for the right moment. She did not panic when the screwdriver came out. She did not try to fight him at range. She kept her distance, stayed calm, and let him commit to his grip first. That is situational awareness. That is the kind of decision-making that only comes from training under pressure.

Second, she broke his balance before he could use hers against her. Judo is built around the principle of kuzushi, unbalancing the opponent at the moment you attack. The foot sweep worked because his weight was already on the foot she swept. She did not overpower him. She redirected what he was already doing.

Third, she used proportional force. Once he was on the ground, the goal was not to keep hitting him. The goal was to pin him until help arrived. She held the position. She did not keep striking once the threat was neutralized.

That last part matters more than most people realize. Knowing when to stop is just as important as knowing how to start. She understood that. Her training taught her that.

The Technique That Made the Difference

The foot sweep she used is one of judo's most fundamental throws. In Japanese it is called osoto-gari, which translates to "major outer reap." Here is why it is so effective in a real situation:

The technique works by stepping beside the attacker, blocking their leg with yours, and using your body weight to push them backward off their base. It requires almost no strength. It requires timing. Most of the force comes from the attacker's own momentum, redirected by the defender.

In judo, this technique is taught to white belts in the first three months. It is a foundational move. The reason it works so well is not because it is complex. It is because it is simple, repeatable, and effective against a much larger opponent.

A 38-year-old woman walking out of a pharmacy can put a grown man on the ground and keep him there, not because she is athletic, not because she is strong, but because she knows how to use her body efficiently when it matters.

That is the promise of judo. And it is why I believe it is one of the most practical self-defense systems available to everyday people, regardless of size, age, or athletic background.

The Part That Stuck With Me

What hit me most about this story was not the technique. It was the response.

This woman did not panic. She did not freeze. She did not wait for someone else to step in. She saw the threat, made a decision, and acted.

That response was not instinct. It was trained behavior. Her nervous system had been through the motions enough times in the dojo that when the real moment came, her body knew what to do.

This is what separates people who survive from people who do not. Not size. Not age. Not luck. The decision, made ahead of time, to prepare.

She made that decision years before she needed it. And it saved her.
